In case of an emergency, the patient presses the button and a medical alarm is sent from the two-way receiver to you.

Medical alert systems remind you and the patient of health checkups and time for taking medications. They are available at local pharmacies. Before you purchase one, you have to ensure it has a powerful speaker. There is no point in buying one that will not serve the intended purpose. Test it before you leave the pharmacy. That way, you will be sure to have purchased the right one. The louder it is the better. Check if the alarm redials itself when the patient has not been attended to. You need one that will go on until somebody attends to the patient.
Choose one that is easy to install and use. This saves you the trouble of looking for someone to install it for you. Ensure you check how long the battery lasts. Buy one that alerts you when the battery is low, so that you can charge in advance. In case the battery goes off and there is an emergency, then the patient will suffer without help. You need to be guaranteed of its going to last otherwise it will not be of much help to you.
Check the features it offers. Some are used to answer incoming calls, which is convenient for a person in a wheel chair. Check on the cost. Do not apply for a monthly one when you cannot afford it. Do not strain yourself financially and lose it at the end. As long as it serves all the purpose, you want and it will fit your budget, purchase it.
Although it has helped so many people, there are limitations. What happens if a patient is paralyzed on the right hand and the device is on the left? What happens if the patient falls and cannot move to access it at the neck? What happens if the battery dies and the patient cannot move to recharge it? What happens if its speaker has some technical problem? We cannot overlook this. Even though the patient has home medical alert system, we still need to check upon them occasionally, to ensure all is well.
